What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a preventive strategy for people who are HIV-negative and want to reduce their risk of contracting HIV. PrEP involves taking medication regularly to protect against HIV infection before potential exposure.
What is is the difference between Tenvir EM, Ricovir EM and Tenof EM?
They all contain thesame combination of two drugs: Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) 300 mg + Emtricitabine (FTC) 200 mg. They are generic versions of Truvada, used for PrEP and HIV treatment. The difference lies in the brand, manufacturer, and price.
What is PrEP used for?
PrEP is used to prevent HIV transmission. It is especially recommended for individuals at higher risk, such as those with HIV-positive partners, people who have multiple sexual partners, or those who do not consistently use condoms. When taken correctly, PrEP offers a high level of protection against HIV.
How does PrEP work?
PrEP works by blocking the virus from establishing a permanent infection in the body. The medication contains antiretroviral drugs that prevent HIV from multiplying if it enters the bloodstream. For PrEP to be effective, it must be taken before exposure to the virus.
Ways to use PrEP
There are two main ways to use PrEP:
PrEP Effectiveness and Cost Compared to the Original
Generic PrEP is as effective as the original brand-name medication (such as Truvada) when taken correctly. Studies show that PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 99% with proper use.
The original branded version of PrEP can cost $1,800 to $2,000 USD per month, while generic versions are significantly more affordable and equally effective, making HIV prevention more accessible to a wider population.
PrEP and STIs
It’s important to note that PrEP only protects against HIV. It does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis. For full protection, it’s still essential to use condoms and get regular STI screenings.
Before Starting PrEP
Before beginning PrEP, it’s crucial to undergo a few medical tests to ensure the medication is safe and appropriate for you. These include:
These steps help guarantee that PrEP is both safe and effective for your specific health profile.
